My name is Eric Campbell and I'm running for the Sherwood School Board. My family and I have lived in Sherwood for over 20 years. Like many of you, my wife Kim and I have found this community to be a wonderful place to raise a family.
I grew up in Southern Oregon and was the first person in my family to attend a four year college. I worked construction jobs to pay my way through college and saw the plethora of living-wage jobs that do not require a college degree. In fact, I almost quit school before my senior year because I was making a good living. After 6 years, I graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Oregon Tech.
When my kids started school in Sherwood, I volunteered in the classroom, organized robotics tournaments, served as CubMaster (Scouts), taught coding classes and supported various STEM/CTE projects within the district. During this time, I saw the commitment from parents, teachers, and community members to work together for the greater good of all kids.
I currently work at Siemens (formerly Mentor Graphics). As an engineer, I understand the impact of new technologies and the elegance of creative solutions made possible by a well-rounded education and diverse opinions. For 15 years, I recruited and trained the new college hires for my group. I have talked to hundreds of university students and heard far too many stories about the bureaucratic stumbling blocks of transitioning from high school to college. When I was on Industry Advisory Boards at state universities, I learned that this disconnect between the first year requirements and the degree programs leads to far too many great students dropping out.
I am sharing this glimpse into my life because I believe my experiences as a construction worker, first-generation college graduate, long-time volunteer in our community, engineer in the high-tech industry, and a college advisory board member have given me a unique view into our K-20 education system. I am passionate about public education and will continue to ensure that all Sherwood children receive an outstanding, well-rounded education which encourages exploration and a excitement for lifelong learning.
I ask for your vote as we continue to make our town a "Great Place for All Kids."
